Sea of Knowledge: Our Story
Welcome to the historical journey of Sindangan National High School and the Supreme Sailors Council. For decades, our school has been a beacon of learning, molding young leaders who navigate the challenges of life with courage and integrity. This is the story of how our legacy began and how the Supreme Sailors Council continues to steer the student body toward excellence.
The First Voyage
In 1965, there was only one high school existing in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte - the Sindangan National Agricultural School (SNAS). It was found out that elementary graduates in this progressive municipality either went to Dipolog City, which is 86 kilometers away from Sindangan, or to other cities or municipalities for their secondary education. Because of this, concerned parents contemplated organizing themselves and putting up a barrio high school in the municipality with the help of the local officials,
The next year, 1966, Sindangan Barrio High School came into existence - a realization of a dream. It opened its doors for secondary education on July 1966 with an initial enrolment of 270 students, 187 first-year students and 83 second-year students, who came from Sindangan and the neighboring towns. At this time, four elementary classrooms of Sindangan Pilot Demonstration School (SPDS) were utilized. There were only 8 full-time and 7 part-time teachers (all from SPDS), with Miss Lilia E. Hamac (then principal of Zamboanga del Norte Provincial High School, Dipolog City), acting as principal of the school.
With the increase in enrolment, a six-classroom building was constructed in 1967 to accommodate first to third year classes. It was during this year that students enrolled themselves with their own armchairs.
In 1969, Sindangan Barrio High School produced 71 first graduates. There were 72 students out of 187 first-year students four years ago who successfully completed the requirements for graduation for secondary education as prescribed by the Bureau of Education. These 72 were the pioneering students of the school.
By virtue of Department Order 46, series of 1974, Sindangan Barrio High School was renamed Sindangan Barangay High School. The principal of SPDS acted as assistant principal of the school per Republic Act No. 6064 Patrocinio C. Gurrea acted as part-time clerk and in charge of keeping the records, and at the same time, the property custodian of the school.
Shortly after the promotion of Mr. Calumba, Mr. Arturo O. Galicia took over the reins. After two years of dedicated service, he was succeeded by Mr. Dersdedit Bugarin. When Mr. Bugarin retired from service, Mrs. Josefina A. Vidal, a secondary school teacher of the school, was locally designated Teacher-in-Charge. A year later, Mrs. Victoria C. Ratificar, another secondary school teacher of the school, was appointed Head Teacher of the school. On January, 1980, she became a full-fledged principal of the school.
On March 16, 1982, through Republic Act No. 192, Sindangan Barangay High School became one of the many nationalized high schools in the country. The school started operating as Sindan-gan National High School on December 3, 1983, with an appropriation of P416,000.00 from the national government.
At the start, the school occupied a portion of the SPDS campus.
Sindangan National High School is now located in a permanent site in Dapaon, Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte. It has a total land area of 3.698 hectares. It is one of the progressive secondary schools in the municipality. It serves the municipality of Sindangan and other neighboring municipalities of the province of Zamboanga del Norte.
Evolution of the Council
The Supreme Sailors Council has grown from a small student group into a leading force for school improvement, constantly evolving to better serve the needs of our student body.
